Junior
Hospitality has been making and selling our submarine sandwiches since 1954.
From the moment it was introduced at the State Fair, the sandwich has been a
hit with Oklahomans.
With the secret
blend of ingredients, the sandwich has developed quite a following. People look
forward to enjoying one (or several) each year and often ask JH members for the
recipe so they can make it at home until it’s available again the next year.
Recently, a
reader wrote into “Melba’s Swap Shop” in the Daily Oklahoman asking for the
recipe and on opening day of the State Fair, when a radio station asked
listeners for their favorite fair memories, a lady called and gushed about the
delicious sandwiches the girls used to sell.
Operating a
booth at the fair became too cost-prohibitive, but club members found ways to
make sure the sandwich continued to reach its fans. It’s been offered at a
church bazaar and craft fairs and is now its own event!
Proceeds from
the sale of the sandwiches helps JH continue to make a positive impact on our
community. Members volunteer at local organizations and fund grants to help
provide vital services.
